About the Maker
Stephen Ratliff
My love for woodworking began in childhood, building whirligigs alongside my grandfather—and eventually a full-size wooden sailboat we actually took out on the water. Those early experiences instilled something lasting: the satisfaction of working with my hands and the quiet pride of bringing an idea to life.
By the age of fifteen, I had built my first full workshop, driven by curiosity and a desire to explore the endless possibilities of wood. From the beginning, I’ve been drawn to its natural beauty—the grain, the texture, and the subtle surprises hidden within each piece.
Craft & Approach
Today, I create handcrafted pieces ranging from heirloom cutting boards and butcher blocks to wood wall art and custom designs. I work primarily with locally sourced hardwoods from the Blue Ridge region, selecting each piece for its character and integrity.
Every piece is made with a careful balance of craftsmanship and artistry—where thoughtful design meets precision execution. The goal is simple: to create work that feels timeless, functional, and deeply connected to the material it comes from.
Rooted in the Mountains
I live in Black Mountain, North Carolina, with my wife—an artist as well—and our two children. They often join me in the shop, continuing the spirit of creativity and family craftsmanship that first inspired my journey.
What started as time spent building with my grandfather has grown into something more: a way of life centered around making, sharing, and creating pieces meant to be used and passed down.
A Lasting Philosophy
I believe the best pieces are the ones that live with you—used daily, worn in over time, and eventually handed down.
That’s what I strive to create: work that carries both purpose and story.
